DEFINITION
Firmly established or fixed in place; having developed the kind of deep, anchoring connection – to a place, a body, a sense of self – that provides real stability.
THE STORY
Root traces to the Proto-Indo-European *wréh₂ds, simply "root." It came into English by an unusually direct northern path — through Old Norse rót rather than the more common Old English route — arriving as rote or roote in Middle English before settling as root. The adjective rooted followed naturally: not just having a root, but having taken one, deliberately and thoroughly.
